Reconstructed Site of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in the Siming Mountains
The Reconstructed Site of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in the Siming Mountains is a cultural heritage site protected by Yuyao City and a classic red tourism destination.
Caomao’an, located on a hill about 2.5 kilometers from Yubaichen Village, Hongshan Township, Yuyao City, is a fairly typical temple structure. It faces west and features a nine-bay wooden main hall, measuring 32.75 meters in width and 8.9 meters in depth. The building has a post-and-lintel timber frame and a flush-gable roof, dating back to the late Qing Dynasty.
Caomao’an is one of the best-preserved religious buildings in the Siming region with distinctive architectural features. It is also the renowned site where revolutionary armed forces were re-established during the revolutionary struggle in eastern Zhejiang. In early May 1947, the Siming Working Committee of the Communist Party of China held an important meeting in Kong’ao, Hongshan Township, deciding to mobilize the masses and build up armed forces. On the night of May 15, under the leadership of the Siming Working Committee, a military founding assembly was convened, announcing the re-establishment of the revolutionary armed forces. Comrades such as Gu Dehuan, Chen Buyi, and Zhu Zhiguang attended the meeting. The unit was publicly designated as the “Fourth Squadron of the 35th Detachment” and internally known as the “Fourth Squadron,” and a Party branch was established within the unit. Later, through numerous battles, the unit rapidly grew and became the main revolutionary armed force in the Siming Mountains, making significant contributions to the revolution in eastern Zhejiang. The founding of the armed forces at Caomao’an reignited the fiery resistance of the people of eastern Zhejiang against Chiang Kai-shek’s rule, marking the transition of the revolutionary struggle in the Siming Mountains from a phase of covert perseverance to guerrilla warfare. This event ushered in a new phase in the revolutionary struggle of eastern Zhejiang and holds great historical significance.
The Reconstructed Site of the Revolutionary Armed Forces in the Siming Mountains was listed as a municipal-level cultural heritage site by the Yuyao Municipal People’s Government on October 16, 1987.
