Guan Di Temple
Guan Di Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Yuyao City.
Guan Di Temple is located at Majiayan in Wangyanzuo Village, Mou Mountain Town, adjacent to the Majiayan Dam to the east, Yanhe Lane to the west, and the Majiayan River to the north, with Shangyu City lying just across the river. The riverside features the distinctive Majiayan Street Corridor, exuding a strong flavor of the Jiangnan water town. The Majiayan Dam is the best-preserved ancient dam in Yuyao.
Guan Di Temple faces west and consists of a front hall and a rear hall, both spanning 19.45 meters in width and divided into five bays. The front hall has a depth of 5.15 meters and features a raised-beam structure; the rear hall has a depth of 8.30 meters, with the central bay using a raised-beam structure supported by ten rafters and four columns, while the side and rear bays use a through-tenon structure. The courtyard between the front and rear halls is 12.80 meters deep, with three-bay side chambers on the northwest side of the courtyard, closely connected to the front hall. These side chambers span 9.95 meters in width and 3.65 meters in depth, also featuring a raised-beam structure. The upper part of the side chambers is enclosed with railings. In the courtyard, right next to the central bay of the front hall, stands a square stage measuring 4.45 meters per side. The stage roof features an intricately crafted caisson ceiling, entirely constructed from fine wooden arches. Two stone pillars on the eastern side bear an inscription: “It is easier to watch a play than to perform one; the ending is harder to achieve than the beginning.” This philosophical couplet reflects the analogy between performing and living. It is signed “The third month of the Jiachun year, 13th year of the Republic of China (1924), composed and inscribed by Lu Lanting of Yuyao.” The temple and stage were built in 1924.
The most distinctive feature of Guan Di Temple and its stage is the use of uniformly round stone pillars throughout, a unique example in Yuyao. In March 1997, the temple was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Yuyao Municipal People’s Government.
