Yuyao Wenchang Pavilion

Yuyao Wenchang Pavilion is a cultural heritage site protected by Yuyao City.

Wenchang Pavilion is located on the southern slope of Longquan Mountain in Yuyao’s urban area. It was first built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty. The existing structure was reconstructed in the 19th year of the Guangxu reign (1893) after the original collapsed in the first year of the Tongzhi reign (1862), and remains intact.

The pavilion faces south with a double-eave roof, featuring horse-head gables on both the east and west sides, covering a total area of 300 square meters, with a total floor space of 250 square meters. It is divided into three bays, with a total width of 8.45 meters and a depth of 9 meters. The central bay features a lifted-beam structure, while the side bays use a through-tenon style, supported by five pillars and eight rafters. In front of the hall is a boat-shaped roofed corridor with finely and vividly carved beams, double eaves with flying rafters, and relatively large construction materials. The floor is paved with staggered stone slabs, the roof is covered with small blue tiles, and includes drip tiles. To the east of the pavilion is an auxiliary building consisting of three bays in a simple-style single-story house. It has a total width of 9.05 meters and a depth of 7.15 meters. The beam structure uses a through-tenon style, supported by five pillars and eight rafters. The materials used are smaller in size, and the decor is more subdued.

Wenchang Pavilion was an important site in ancient times where scholars worshipped Wenchang, the deity governing academic success and imperial examination achievements, and it had considerable influence. It holds significant historical and architectural value.

Wenchang Pavilion was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site by the Yuyao Municipal People's Government on May 18, 2001.
