Xujia at Qianhetou
Xujia at Qianhetou is a cultural relic protection unit of Ningbo City.
Located in Huilong Village, Huangjibu Town. It is a residential building from the Qing Dynasty. The entire residence faces south and is arranged along a central axis from south to north, consisting of a brick-and-stone entrance hall, a stone gate wall, and the main building in sequence, with wing rooms on either side of the main building. The entrance hall has five bays and an eight-character wall gate. The main building has three bays, and each wing room has two bays. The lattice wood windows and stone window carvings of this residence feature exquisite craftsmanship, with vivid patterns full of life and a distinctive local style of Yaowest. The layout is compact yet not cramped, and the decoration is elaborate without being overly ornate, retaining the fundamental characteristics of residential architecture. Xujia at Qianhetou is one of the most completely preserved residential buildings in the water town environment of our city.
Xujia at Qianhetou was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Yuyao Municipal People's Government on May 18, 2001.
Huilong Village: Elders in Huilong Village have all heard of Dan Shu School. Dan Shu School is located north of Hui Long Bridge under the camphor trees. Established in 1908, it was founded by He Dan Shu, a comprador of Shanghai Rui Sheng Foreign Firm during the late Qing Dynasty and a provisional provincial governor of the third rank. He Dan Shu was a native of Huilong. Although he had little formal education, he started by selling fruit and later made his fortune trading arms. To ensure that children in his hometown would not end up like him—regretting a lack of education from a young age—he funded the construction of Dan Shu School. The school had 120 mu of school fields.
