Yuyao Scenic Area
Located in the northern part of eastern Zhejiang Province, in the Yao River basin west of Ningbo City, it borders the Siming Mountain Range to the south and faces Hangzhou Bay to the north. Covering an area of 1,336.8 square kilometers, it has a population of nearly one million. The municipal government is headquartered in Yuyao Town. The terrain of the city slopes from high in the south to low in the north, with the Yao River Plain in the central area formed by marine sedimentation. The northeastern part consists of hills, while the northwestern region is coastal plain. The area has over 30 rivers of varying sizes, with the Yao River being the main one. It connects to the Eastern Zhejiang Canal in the west and flows eastward into the sea. In 1985, it was restructured from a county into a county-level city. It currently administers 56 townships, 15 towns, and 820 administrative villages. Historically, Yuyao has been home to many eminent scholars and is known as the “Famous Land of Literature.” Yuyao has long been a major producer of grain and cotton, with rice cultivation dating back 7,000 years, making it one of the world’s key origins of rice. The city’s commerce and industry developed early. During the Tang Dynasty, the “Yue Porcelain” produced in Shanglin Lake was renowned as “Mise Celadon.” Today, Yuyao has initially established an industrial economic system supported by textiles and processing industries, with a focus on machinery, plastics, and electronic instruments, combining small and medium-sized enterprises with township enterprises. Major peaks include Qinghuwan Hill, which is home to rare wild animals such as pangolins, red-crowned cranes, and white cranes. Key tourist attractions include the Hemudu Site, the lecture site of Wang Yangming, the tomb of Huang Zongxi, Tongji Bridge, and Shunjiang Tower. The ever-evolving city of Yuyao now features three major tourist areas: the ancient Hemudu culture, historical sites in Longquan Mountain urban district, and the natural scenery of Siming Mountain, all of which are attracting batches of domestic and international visitors with their unique charm.
