Sun Zhonglie Shrine
The Sun Zhonglie Shrine is a cultural relic protection unit of Yuyao City.
The Sun Zhonglie Shrine is situated at the southern foot of Longquan Mountain in Yangming Subdistrict, Yuyao City, to the south of Zhongtian Pavilion, and was built to commemorate Sun Sui, an official of the Ming Dynasty. Sun Sui (1460–1519), courtesy name Decai, style name Yichuan, was posthumously honored with the title "Zhonglie" (Loyal and Martyred). He was a scholar-official who passed the imperial examination in the sixth year of the Hongzhi era (1493) of the Ming Dynasty, eventually becoming Right Vice Censor-in-Chief. He was a man of integrity who stood firmly against Prince Ning Zhu Chenhao’s rebellion and was willing to sacrifice his life for the country.
The shrine faces south and features a five-bay main hall at the mountaintop with a front corridor and covered porch. The central bay uses a post-and-lintel beam framework supported by four pillars and eight rafters. The side bays use a mixed post-and-lintel and through-tenon beam framework, supported by five pillars and eight rafters.
Though modest in scale, the entire structure is simple and elegant, representing a fine example of late Qing dynasty memorial shrines for notable figures in Yuyao.
On September 23, 2014, the Yuyao Municipal People’s Government designated it as part of the sixth batch of municipal-level cultural relic protection units.
