Luoyang Scenic Area

Luoyang Scenic Area is located at the source of the Nanxi River, within the territories of Xixia and Panjing townships at the river’s origin. It is a rare untouched gem in southern Zhejiang, serving as the birthplace of the Southern Zhejiang Revolutionary Committee and one of the strongholds of the Red 13th Army of Southern Zhejiang.

The area features a blend of waterfalls, ice formations, and forests, concealed within deep mountain forests. Highlights include the source of the Nanxi River, the Dragon and Phoenix Waterfall, the Stone Gate, the Ice Pit, and the primeval forest—all unique in their own right. A fusion of danger, wonder, seclusion, and antiquity, along with a convergence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, make it an ideal destination for adventure tourism.

Ice Pit: Formed in Baizhang Pit, it appears during the depths of winter when temperatures plummet sharply, earning the name “Baizhang’s Jade Flowers.” It is a rare spectacle in southern Zhejiang.

Dragon and Phoenix Waterfall: Located 3 kilometers east of Luoyang Village in Xixia Township, within Baizhang Pit, it is divided into upper and lower sections, each about 90 meters high, with a deep pool in between embedded in the rocky cliff, emerald green like jade. During heavy rain, the two falls merge into one, plunging over 180 meters down the cliff face like a roaring dragon, shaking the earth and sky. The gushing wind is intense and awe-inspiring.

Sun Rock: Situated to the right of the Dragon and Phoenix Waterfall, it forms a cliff wall with layered stone patterns resembling a fan. Its crimson rock glows like the rising sun, hence the name “Sun Rock.” At the top of the Sun Rock is a fan-shaped fish named “Hao,” with wings spread as if ready to fly, complementing the beauty of the Sun Rock.

Stone Gate: Spanning Baizhang Pit and embedded within the cliffs, there are three stone gates, named for their resemblance to the thresholds found in houses. The upper gate blocks the stream to form a small pool, with water flowing from the cliff into the pool; the middle gate features a fairly wide pool, with water streaming out from its mouth; the lower gate has a long and narrow pool, with a waterfall cascading down outside the threshold.

Banianluo Primeval Forest: Located upstream of the Dragon and Phoenix Waterfall, covering an area of over 500 acres, it is dominated by Huangshan pines and kaizhong trees. The forest is filled with towering ancient trees and widespread vines. According to forestry authorities, it is an ancient primeval forest, a rarity in southern Zhejiang.

Buddha Figures: Hidden on the rock face of the lower section of the Dragon and Phoenix Waterfall, the images of two Buddhas are clearly visible—one resembling an old monk and the other an old deity of longevity. The old monk has a pointed head, wears a long robe, and stands on the rock face; the deity of longevity stands to the left of the monk, with a head shaped like a peach, facing forward in a welcoming gesture, blessing visitors with good fortune and a long life.
