Vernacular Architecture of Nanyang Village

The vernacular architecture of Nanyang Village is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Zhejiang Province.

The architecture of Nanyang Village is adapted to the terrain, with most buildings facing from south to north. It has preserved over ten ancient residential complexes in the form of quadrangle or triple-courtyard houses relatively intact. These are mainly traditional structures from the mid to late Qing Dynasty, featuring large scale, simple elegance, exquisite wood carvings, and high architectural value.

The village entrance is situated in the northeastern part of the village and includes the Temple of the White Crane Deity and the Jin Clan Ancestral Hall dating back to the Qing Dynasty. At the village’s far end lies the now-defunct Nanya School. The settlement is organized along a central longitudinal main street that extends southward to the village end, interspersed with transverse alleyways.

Nowadays, most newly built structures in Nanyang are concentrated in the northern part of the village. Although the layout of the historical building complex in the southern section has been largely preserved, some wing rooms have been demolished and replaced with newly built brick-and-tile houses, severely impacting the original architectural character. The two old houses at the southernmost part of the village are currently under renovation and reconstruction, and the villagers also look forward to the future development of tourism.

In 2011, the “Vernacular Architecture of Nanyang Village” was designated as part of the sixth batch of cultural heritage conservation units in Zhejiang Province. In 2017, Nanyang Village was listed in the first group of provincial-level traditional villages in Zhejiang.
