Former Residence of Wang Xizhi Scenic Area
The Former Residence of Wang Xizhi Scenic Area is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a cultural tourism site.
The late-years retreat and burial place of Wang Xizhi, the Sage of Calligraphy, is located on the Waterfall Mountain in Jinting, revered as the "Twenty-Seventh Grotto-Heaven" in Taoism. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, where countless cliffs vie in beauty and ravines compete in flow, Wang Xizhi’s former residence lies nestled within this tranquil valley. The scenic area houses a vast collection of calligraphic masterpieces, forming a unique landscape of a calligraphy garden. The residence is suffused with a strong poetic and ink-wash fragrance. Together with the nearby Huatang Ancient Village, a settlement of scholarly descendants, it forms a cultural tourism area themed around calligraphy pilgrimage.
The Former Residence of Wang Xizhi is located in Jinting Town, 25 kilometers east of Shengzhou City. Surrounded by mountains, the residence is nestled within this quiet valley.
The series of structures at Wang Xizhi’s former residence include the Jinting Taoist Temple, the Hall of the Sage of Calligraphy, the Temple of General Youjun, the Snow Creek Academy, and the Murmuring Stream Pavilion. The area also features steles, calligraphy gardens, poetry stones, and lotus ponds. Regular calligraphy exhibitions are held here, and visitors can also send postcards and purchase souvenirs.
The adjacent Huatang Ancient Village is a settlement of Wang Xizhi’s descendants. The grand, upturned eaves and intricately carved patterns of the Wang Family Ancestral Hall, along with the dragon-tail carvings at the roof ends, showcase the family’s noble bearing. Long alleys connect one ancient gatehouse after another, exuding the leisure and elegance of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Jinting in Shengzhou, Keqin in Shaoxing, and Xikou in Fenghua have been integrated into the popular self-driving destination known as the “Poetic Painting Tour of Eastern Zhejiang.”
