Former Residence of Ma Yinchu in Shengzhou
The former residence of Ma Yinchu in Shengzhou is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a cultural relics protection unit of Zhejiang Province.
The former residence of Ma Yinchu in Shengzhou covers an area of 628 square meters, with a construction area of 1,228 square meters. It faces south and has three sections, with outer walls made of brick and inner walls constructed from wooden planks. The entrance hall has three bays and is located along the street, featuring a stone lintel and solid doors. The second and third sections each have five bays, both employing a beam-frame structure with five pillars and seven rafters, topped with a flush gable roof; the southern section has a single eave and the northern section a double eave. Each section is connected by wing rooms, with two courtyards in between — the front one small and the rear one larger — ensuring good ventilation and ample sunlight. The middle of the ground floor of the second section serves as both a hall and a passageway; the two eastern rooms function as a small sitting room and an accounting office, while the western side room was the bedroom of Ma Yinchu’s parents and also his birthplace. The western end room served as the kitchen for the Ma family. The third section consists of five rooms: the two eastern and western rooms are combined to form the brewing site of the “Ma Shu Ji” distillery; the central hall acts as a connecting corridor and is the hub for the brewing process, with a door to the outside at the north for delivering goods. The northern room of the western wing was Ma Yinchu’s bedroom and staircase access, while the eastern wing includes the kitchen and dining room for the distillery’s master and apprentices. The upper floors of the second and third sections are interconnected by corridors, commonly known as “horse-walking corridors,” which were originally used as living quarters for the Ma brothers.
Currently, the ground floor of the former residence has been restored to its original appearance, with furnishings remaining as they were. Between the hall and the sitting room are displayed carved and openwork antique tables and chairs, accompanied by an old clock and hat stands; the bedroom is furnished with a sedan-style bed and chests. The accounting office displays an account cabinet and the traditional scholar’s four treasures, while the kitchen features an old-style stove.
The second floor is called the “Garden of Integrity.” It showcases the life and deeds of Ma Yinchu, focusing on themes such as diligence, integrity, uprightness, and noble character. Using metaphors like bamboo by the stream, lotus in the pond, and poems praising the lotus, it is divided into more than ten sections including “Chronicles of Ma Yinchu,” “Shengzhou Nurtured Ma Yinchu,” “Ma Yinchu, a Respected Scholar,” “Loving the Country and People, Speaking Boldly,” “Advancing with the Times, Seeking Truth and Innovation,” “Upholding Truth and Sacrificing for Justice,” “Life Never Ends, Striving Without Cease,” “Advocating Simplicity and Leading a Clean Life,” “Deep Homesickness, Returning to One’s Roots,” and “A Role Model for Future Generations, Shining Upon the World.” The exhibition integrates historical artifacts, photographs, sculptures, artistic paintings, and modern multimedia technology. The entire residence displays over 180 historical photos and charts, as well as more than 230 artifacts, offering rich content and detailed information that vividly reflect Ma Yinchu’s patriotism, integrity, and uprightness.
