Luoyang Scenic Area

Luoyang Scenic Area is located at the source of the Nanxi River, within the territories of Xixia and Panjing townships at the headwaters of the Nanxi River. It is a rare untouched paradise in southern Zhejiang, serving as the birthplace of the Southern Zhejiang Revolutionary Committee and one of the bases of the 13th Red Army of Southern Zhejiang.

The area features a harmonious blend of waterfalls, ice formations, and forests, tucked away in the deep mountains and dense forests. Highlights include the source of the Nanxi River, the Dragon-Phoenix Waterfall, the Stone Threshold, the Ice Pit, and the primeval forest—all of which are unique in their own right. A fusion of danger, wonder, seclusion, and antiquity, along with the convergence of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, makes it an excellent destination for adventure tourism.

Ice Pit: Formed in Baizhang Pit, it appears during the bitter cold of deep winter when temperatures plummet suddenly. Known as the “Baizhang Jade Flowers,” it is a rare spectacle in southern Zhejiang.

Dragon-Phoenix Waterfall: Located 3 kilometers east of Luoyang Village in Xixia Township, within Baizhang Pit, it is divided into upper and lower sections, each about 90 meters high. Between them lies a deep pool embedded in the rocky cliff, emerald green like jade. During heavy rain, the two falls merge into one, cascading down from a cliff over 180 meters high like a roaring dragon, shaking the earth and sky. The powerful gusts from the falls are both awe-inspiring and intimidating.

Sun Rock: Situated to the right of the Dragon-Phoenix Waterfall, it features rock walls that spread out layer by layer like fan ribs. The reddish rock resembles the glow of the rising sun, hence the name “Sun Rock.” At the top of Sun Rock is a fan-shaped fish-like formation named “Hao,” with wings spread as if ready to take flight, complementing the beauty of the Sun Rock.

Stone Threshold: Spanning Baizhang Pit and embedded within the cliffs, there are three thresholds, named for their resemblance to the door sills found in houses. The upper threshold blocks the stream to form a small pool, with water flowing from the cliff into the pool. The middle threshold has a fairly wide pool, with water streaming down from the pool’s opening. The lower threshold features a long and narrow pool, with a waterfall gushing down outside the sill.

Banianluo Primeval Forest: Located upstream of the Dragon-Phoenix Waterfall, it spans over 500 acres and mainly consists of Huangshan pines and kaizhong trees. Towering ancient trees and sprawling vines fill the forest. According to forestry authorities, it is an ancient primeval forest, a rare sight in southern Zhejiang.

Buddha Figures: Hidden on the rock wall of the lower section of the Dragon-Phoenix Waterfall, the images of two Buddha-like figures are clearly visible—one resembling an old monk and the other an old deity of longevity. The monk has a pointed head and wears a long robe, standing firmly on the rock wall. The deity of longevity stands to the left of the monk, with a head shaped like a peach, facing forward in a welcoming gesture, blessing visitors with good fortune and a long life.
