Yaxiaku

Located in a valley 2.5 kilometers northwest of Xiaoruokou in Yongjia County, Yaxiaku is a famous gorge stretching one kilometer long and over 30 meters wide, with steep cliffs on either side rising more than 300 meters high, allowing only a thin strip of blue sky to show. Visitors here feel as though they are in an alley between towering skyscrapers, with dark cliffs pressing in from both sides, and sunlight visible for only a few minutes even at midday in summer.

Upon entering Yaxiaku, visitors are greeted by a sheer cliff face hundreds of feet high, instantly making one hesitate to proceed. Looking up, on the right side, a shy waterfall cascades down like a white silk ribbon from a cliff about 70–80 meters high, barely visible in glimpses. Steep stone steps, carved about 20 meters high into the cliff, allow the brave to climb with the aid of railings up to a gap on the left side of the cliff. At this gap, a massive waterfall comes rushing toward you, with the misty spray feeling like rain and the cold air biting.

Below lies a pool about 100 square meters in size, with a bed covered in pebbles and surrounded by steep stone walls. Standing here feels like being inside a deep well. During the rainy season, the waterfall often covers the entire surface of the pool, creating an intimidating sight that makes it difficult to approach.

Yaxiaku features a deep valley with long gullies, overlapping cliffs, and rugged beauty, combining danger and grandeur with serene elegance. The area also boasts many other scenic spots. By the entrance, by the roadside, there is a huge rock resembling a meditating immortal with a kind smile, known as the “Welcoming Immortal.” To the left lies a valley approximately 200 meters long and nearly 20 meters wide, called the “Immortal Gully,” which is very quiet. On the mountainside to the left, there is a rock about 10 square meters in size, named the “Owl Rock.” About 100 meters above the Owl Rock, there is a rectangular boulder supported by a thick, short stone pillar beneath it, resembling a sedan chair being carried — known as the “Immortals Carrying a Sedan Chair.”
