The Yubei Armed Uprising Memorial Pavilion is a classic destination for red tourism.

Yubei Village is an ancient settlement with a long history and profound cultural heritage. Known for its simple and honest folk customs, it was once one of the central areas of activity for the Red 13th Army during the Agrarian Revolutionary War. During the Anti-Japanese War, it served as the main base for the Oubei County Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. On March 2, 1945, the Nationalist Yongjia County gendarmerie attempted to sabotage the committee. Villagers from Yubei armed themselves with hunting rifles and hoes to repel the Nationalist forces’ attack, capturing weapons from the Yantan Township Office and Xikou Police Station. This historic event is known as the “Yubei Armed Uprising.” Subsequently, the county committee established the Oubei Anti-Japanese Armed Squad here. It later merged with the Yueqing People’s Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Corps to form the 700-strong Yongle People’s Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Guerrilla Corps, marking a new phase in the anti-Japanese and anti-collaborationist struggle in the Oubei region. From March to May 1945, the village successfully repelled five “mopping-up” operations by reactionary forces. During the fifth such operation, the Nationalist diehards mobilized heavy forces for the offensive, accompanied by looting and arson, burning over 540 civilian houses. The resilient people of Yubei Village made great sacrifices and paid a heavy price for the revolutionary cause.

The Yubei Armed Uprising Memorial Pavilion is located in Yubei Village, Yantan Town, Yongjia County, and was built in 1985. The memorial stele stands 6.3 meters tall, with a base that is 2.3 meters long and wide. The inscription on the stele, reading “Yubei Armed Uprising Memorial Pavilion,” was penned by the renowned calligrapher Ren Zheng. Hu Jing?, who once served as the Secretary of the Oubei County Committee of the CCP and Political Commissar of the Yongle People’s Anti-Japanese Self-Defense Guerrilla Corps, authored the inscription on the stele. Behind the stele lies a memorial pavilion, with a base measuring 7.5 meters in length and 5.8 meters in width. It features corridors that are 1.6 meters wide on all four sides, surrounded by reinforced concrete railings, and a cement platform at the top. The front of the pavilion bears an inscription reading “Yubei Armed Uprising Memorial Pavilion,” written by Wang Fang, former Secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the CCP.

The Yubei Armed Uprising Memorial Pavilion is a patriotic education base in Yongjia County.
