Red Village Huangshan

Huangshan Village is located on the northeastern slope of Darukeng in Daruyan Town, Yongjia County. With high mountains and little arable land, the soil is infertile and the villagers lived in poverty. However, crossing the Dayuan Mountain Ridge from Huangshan leads to the Wushuniulong Stream. During the time when Hu Gongmian was promoting the revolution in Longxi, the youth of this village were educated, and Hu Gongmian himself once visited to spread the seeds of revolution. When the 13th Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army was established, the village, with only 28 households, saw over 20 of its residents join the Red Army.

In early October 1930, Chen Shizhang and Chen Shidang, leaders of the Red Army in Darukeng, gathered Red Army soldiers at Huangshan for a meeting. Local thugs in Darukeng discovered this and quickly mobilized a militia, rushing up to Huangshan to search for them. They arrogantly marched uphill, thinking the Red Army had no modern firearms. But when they reached the Lengshuikeng area at the entrance of Huangshan Village, they were attacked by Red Army soldiers throwing stones. The thugs cried out in terror and fled back downhill. Around fifty to sixty Red Army soldiers chased them all the way to Darukeng Village, where a victory celebration meeting was held in the village’s ancestral hall. On October 30, a group of militiamen and thugs suddenly stormed into Huangshan Village. Unprepared, the Red Army members and revolutionary villagers had no choice but to flee uphill and hide in the forest. Li Zengxi, a Red Army soldier, managed to hide in a sweet potato seed storage pit and was not discovered, but Han Azhe was captured. The enemy dragged him away, placed him on a stone block, and beheaded him. They then strung his head with a vine and hung it around the neck of Han Azhe’s uncle, Han Chaoyou, parading him through the village. Later, the head was hung on a tallow tree by the roadside at the entrance of Huangtan, as a warning to the public. The enemy also set fire to two houses belonging to Red Army member Li Zengxi and others, burning a total of 12 rooms.

Red Village Huangshan is located in the Huangshan Natural Village of Dayuxia Village, Daruyan Town, Yongjia County, adjacent to the Shimenditai Scenic Area of Daruyan Rock. It boasts beautiful landscapes with peculiar mountains and clear waters.
