Former Site of the Underground Expansion of the First Regiment of the Red 13th Army in Xiasheng Village

Xiasheng Village is located in the northwest of Yongjia County, by the upper reaches of the Nanxi River’s Xiao Source, serving as a key transit point between the Xixi and Nanxi rivers. To the south, it connects to ?? Bay, from where boats can reach Wenzhou; to the north, it leads to Jiekeng, providing access to Jinyun and Xianju. A stream flows past the front of the village, with a broad river beach nearby. Along the stream, an arc-shaped wall was built alongside the village, featuring dozens of gunports, and fortress gates were erected at both ends of the wall, making it a strategically defensible stronghold.

In November 1929, Zhang Hua, a farmer from Xiakoukou Village in Shiran Township, established a Red Army guerrilla unit here, which was later incorporated as the Third Battalion of the Second Regiment of the First Regiment of the Red 13th Army. Thereafter, the village became a base for peasant armed struggle and the Red Army guerrillas. After each battle, the First Battalion of the First Regiment of the Red 1st Army, Second Battalion, would return to Xiasheng and Shiran villages for rest and regrouping. The village also had a Red Guards unit responsible for supplying the Red Army.

In mid-August 1930, Chen Wenjie, Director of the Political Department of the Red 13th Army, came to Shangdong Village to announce the decision to attack Jinyun County. On August 25, over 2,000 Red Army soldiers from Wushuniu, Bilian, Ming’ao, Qiaoxia, and other areas gathered on the river beach in front of Xiasheng Village for a mass meeting. At the meeting, Chen Wenjie, standing on a makeshift platform by the riverbank, announced the Army Headquarters' decision: the First Regiment of the Red 13th Army would be expanded to division-level organization; at the same time, the Red Army forces were ordered to march westward—first to attack Jinyun County, then Yongkang, and finally to join forces with the Third Regiment to assault Jinhua. After the meeting, the 2,000-strong Red Army force proceeded to Shangdong to intensify military training and prepare for the assault on Jinyun.
