The Former Residence of the Three Martyrs of the Xie Family is a cultural tourism attraction.
Xie Yongqing (1898–1944), courtesy name Qingsheng, was born in 1898 in Pengxi Village, Yongjia County. In 1917, after graduating from Fenglin Higher Primary School, he worked as a primary school teacher in Hesheng and Zhuyu, Yueqing, among other places. In 1930, he resolutely resigned from his teaching position to join the 13th Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army. In June of the same year, he was captured during the battle at Aimenling on the border between Yongjia and Yueqing and was taken to Suzhou Prison. The following spring, he joined the Communist Party through Cheng Dawei, a fellow prisoner and Communist Party member. In August 1937, he was released and returned home, where he successively served as an officer and then general officer of the Second Branch of the Yongjia Wartime Youth Service Corps. In November 1938, he became Secretary of the CPC Xinanxi Central District Committee. In December 1940, he was arrested for the second time by the diehard faction of the Kuomintang in Xiajia’ao Village, Yongjia. On April 19 of the following year, he escaped from prison amid the chaos following the Japanese attack on Wenzhou. In the second half of 1941, he taught in Panjing and donated his salary to the Party as operational funds. In the autumn of 1943, as arranged by the Party organization, he led his eldest son Xie Yulu and Xie Fangshu, among others, to the CPC Yinfeng County Committee in the Siming Mountain base area in eastern Zhejiang to carry out organizational work, later serving as head of the Xidong Liaison Station of the Eastern Zhejiang Guerrilla Column. In late March 1944, he was arrested by the diehard faction of the Kuomintang and executed in early April.
Xie Yulu (1920–1945), eldest son of Xie Yongqing, was born in September 1920. Under his father’s guidance, he joined the Communist Party in 1940. In the autumn of 1943, he followed his father to Siming Mountain and later served as a squad leader in the 3rd Battalion of the 3rd Detachment of the New Fourth Army’s Eastern Zhejiang Column. In September 1945, when the New Fourth Army’s Eastern Zhejiang forces were ordered to retreat northward, he was wounded in action and died due to excessive blood loss.
Xie Yujiu (1928–1947), second son of Xie Yongqing, was born in September 1928. He successively served as a child brigade captain and a courier for a unit of the Kuocang guerrilla forces, actively delivering letters and revolutionary publications for the Party organization. In the spring of 1946, he was approved as a probationary member of the Party. The following February, he was arrested, tortured brutally by the Kuocang Pacification Office of the Kuomintang, who even cut off his ears, before being secretly executed at Bafangshan under Fenglin.
The Former Residence of the Three Martyrs of the Xie Family is located at Nos. 9–12, Puzhong Road, Peng’er Village, Pengxi, Donggao Township. It faces northeast and is built along a southwest axis. The structure consists of two courtyards, flanked by two side wings, forming a square-shaped “siheyuan” (courtyard house) with a well-preserved vintage appearance. The square courtyard floor is paved with cobblestones, featuring a central pathway also laid with small cobblestones in an elegant design. The surrounding door frames are inlaid with cobblestone patterns, creating highly aesthetic compositions. The residence has a total of 20 rooms, covering an area of about 1,000 square meters, with a built-up area of approximately 512 square meters. It is currently managed and inhabited by Xie Yongqing’s cousin.
