Inkstone Rock Cliff Inscriptions

The Inkstone Rock Cliff Inscriptions are a cultural relic protection unit of Yongjia County.

The Inkstone Rock Cliff Inscriptions are located at the southern end of Xiaodong Village, Luofu, Qingshui Wharf Town, Yongjia County, on the southern foothills of Snake Mountain. They were carved in the 12th year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty (1584). The Guangxu-era Yongjia County Annals record: “Near He Mountain lies Zhang Mountain, where there is the River-Embracing Pavilion. At the water pool below the mountain stands a rock three zhang high, on which Wei Chengfang, the prefect of the Ming Dynasty, inscribed the three seal characters ‘Inkstone Rock.’” The Inkstone Rock is a massive rock shaped like an inkstone, about 5 meters high and over 2 meters wide. On the upper part of the northern cliff face, the three seal characters “Inkstone Rock” are horizontally engraved, with the signature in three rows of 27 running script characters vertically inscribed: “In early summer of the Jiashen year of the Wanli reign, I visited Magistrate Lin of Huayuan with Magistrate Pan. While traveling in the eastern part of this county, Qi Zhu Wei Chengfang inscribed this.”

In 1983, the Inkstone Rock Cliff Inscriptions were listed as a county-level cultural relic protection unit of Yongjia County.
