Renji Temple was first built during the Ming Dynasty, facing south with an area of 300 square meters. It has five bays in width and two courtyards in depth, forming a courtyard-style complex. A square pond is dug in the central courtyard, with moon terraces set along the east, west, and south sides by the water. The entrance is through a flat stone slab bridge, giving it a unique layout. The third courtyard houses the Zhou Chu Memorial Hall. Zhou Chu (240–299), a native of Yangxian, Yixing in the Western Jin Dynasty, was a troublemaker in his youth. The elders dubbed him one of the “Three Scourges” along with a flood dragon and a tiger. Later, he slew the dragon and shot the tiger, reformed himself, made great achievements, and became a renowned statesman. The villagers enshrined him as the temple’s patron deity to educate their descendants.
