The Tomb of Yu Gong at Daxibian

The Tomb of Yu Gong at Daxibian is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

The Tomb of Yu Gong at Daxibian is located on a small hill behind Yangguang Village in Daxibian, facing south with a slight 15-degree inclination to the northeast. In front of the tomb chamber stands a four-pillar, three-bay, three-story stone memorial archway, divided into two levels: the front level is a stone incense table, and the rear level is the tomb chamber, constructed with stone slabs in the form of a gatehouse. Inside is a stone stele inscribed with the Ming Dynasty date “the third year of the Longqing era.” The structure has a width of approximately 7.7 meters, a depth of 15.7 meters, and covers an area of 121 square meters. The inscriptions on the stele have faded and become blurred due to sun exposure and weathering. The tomb features an intact layout, a long history, and relatively well-preserved condition, providing important physical evidence for the study of Ming Dynasty tombs in Kaihua as well as the migration and settlement of the Yu family in the region. It holds certain cultural heritage value.

The inscription reads as follows: I often observe that when writers compose texts, they tend to conceal shame and highlight virtue, excessively praising while avoiding criticism, leaning too close to flattery. Therefore, I have chosen to narrate my own life experiences frankly and present them truthfully for posterity.

It states: My ancestors migrated from Luoman Pond to Qingzhang, then moved on to Fangshan. During the Song Dynasty, the ancestor known as Qian Shiwu settled in Liudu. After nine generations, my late father, named Kuan, was born. He was upright and unyielding. At the age of thirty, he was falsely accused of a homicide and detained at Gaoyuan. Nevertheless, he was generous and often saved lives. He would often say that if he were to receive good fortune, have his name cleared, and be reunited with his family, any future sons should be named “Congxin” (Following the Heart). After thirteen years of imprisonment, his name was finally cleared...

According to the content of the inscription, the tomb owner endured many hardships in life but remained self-reliant, persevering, and practiced diligence and frugality in managing his household.
