Former Site of the New Fourth Army Reorganization in Kaihua

The former site of the New Fourth Army reorganization in Kaihua is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

The former site of the New Fourth Army reorganization in Kaihua is located in Chengguan Town and Huabu Town, Kaihua County, dating back to 1938.

Kaihua is known as the "Source of the Qiantang River" and also the "Origin of the Iron Army." In January 1938, Chen Yi, then Deputy Secretary of the New Fourth Army Branch of the Central Revolutionary Military Commission of the Chinese Communist Party, led troops to the border area between Anhui and Zhejiang to assess enemy and friendly forces. He concluded that Kaihua had the ideal conditions of "right timing, geographical advantage, and harmonious human relations" for the New Fourth Army to gather. In mid-February 1938, Chen Yi, along with over twenty members including key personnel from the army headquarters and the battlefield service troupe, set out from southern Anhui to Kaihua to organize and lead the assembly and formation of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd detachments of the New Fourth Army. The former assembly sites include Xiangpaoshudi in Huabu Town, Kaihua County, and Zhengyifang in Kaihua County's urban area.

On January 7, 2011, it was announced as part of the sixth batch of cultural relic protection units of Zhejiang Province.
