The ancient city wall of Quzhou is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The ancient city wall of Quzhou is divided into four layers: the "Imperial Capital," the "Royal City," the "Palace City," and the "Outer Wall." Since Quzhou was not the seat of the royal family, its ancient city wall consists only of the "Palace City" and the "Outer Wall." Large walls had eight gates, medium-sized walls had six, and small walls had four. As a key transportation junction in western Zhejiang, Quzhou had six gates: the East Gate, North Gate, Big West Gate, Small West Gate, Big South Gate, and Small South Gate.

The ancient city wall of Quzhou served the functions of stationing troops and storing grain, reflecting the original purpose of ancient wall construction — all designed for warfare. However, with the advancement of science and technology, changes in public perception, and the progress of the times, this function of the city walls is gradually fading and losing its original value.
