Quzhou Museum

Quzhou Museum is a national second-class museum and the largest comprehensive museum in Quzhou that integrates collection, research, and public exhibitions. The museum houses 12,700 cultural relics (sets, parts), including 4,623 unearthed artifacts, nearly 30,000 ancient books in 6,475 volumes, and around 600 pieces (approximately 1,200 scrolls) of paintings and calligraphy, as well as over 1,000 historical documents.

Located at No. 98 Xinqiao Street, Kecheng District, Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province, Quzhou Museum was established in 1985. It originally operated from the Confucius South Clan Ancestral Temple. The new museum officially opened on September 23, 2004, and has been fully open to the public free of charge since 2005.

Quzhou Museum has accumulated a large collection of natural, historical, and artistic artifacts, including the skeletal fossil of a lizard-type dinosaur — "Lixian Jiangshan Dragon" (a new genus and species), stone tools, ceramics, gold and silverware, bronzes, jade artifacts, miscellaneous objects, paintings and calligraphy, ancient books from the Neolithic Age to the Republican Era, as well as modern revolutionary historical relics. According to data from the Zhejiang Provincial Museum in November 2019, Quzhou Museum houses nearly 30,000 cultural relics, comprising over 5,000 historical artifacts, nearly 30,000 ancient books and historical materials, and more than 1,200 paintings and calligraphy works.

Covering an area of 10,000 square meters with a building area of 9,400 square meters, Quzhou Museum has a total investment of over 60 million yuan. The museum’s total construction area of 9,400 square meters consists of three parts: the plaza, the main building, and auxiliary rooms. The exterior walls of the main building are clad in steel-mounted granite, and the roof features a steel space frame structure. The permanent exhibitions in Quzhou Museum mainly include the “Historical Exhibition Area,” “The Great Chessboard of Heaven and Earth,” “Lixian Jiangshan Dragon,” and “Ancient Wuzhou Kiln Porcelain Exhibition.”

As of May 2018, the museum has received over 7 million visitors, averaging more than 1,000 visitors per day.
