Mapeng Catholic Church

Mapeng Catholic Church is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhejiang Province.

Mapeng Catholic Church is located in Mapeng Village, Shiliang Town, Kecheng District, Quzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It was originally built in the 10th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1830), initially as a traditional Chinese-style house, and was rebuilt in a Western style in the 1st year of the Republic of China (1912). The building faces east and has a four-pillar archway-style façade. Originally, it was surrounded by structures such as the priest’s residence, nuns’ residence, Peixin Primary School, nursery, and missionaries’ cemetery. The village where the church is located, Mapeng Village, is also a settlement of Catholic believers.

Shiliang Town: Shiliang Town in Kecheng District is located about ten kilometers northwest of downtown Quzhou. It borders Qili Township and Jiuhua Township to the north, Kecheng Township to the south, Hangbu Town and Gouxi Township to the west, and Wantian Township and Jiuhua Township to the east. The town covers an area of 121.6 square kilometers, governs 34 administrative villages, and has a population of approximately 31,000, with about 16,000 laborers. It is a major agricultural town and known as the “hometown of oranges.” The orange cultivation area reaches 18,000 mu, and two orange brands, “Paixitou No. 7” and “Xiacun No. 1,” have won the national Ministry of Agriculture’s “Second Prize” for excellent taste.
