Longwang Mountain

Longwang Mountain is located at 30°23' north latitude and 119°23' east longitude in Anji County, Zhejiang Province. In 1985, with the approval of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government, the Longwang Mountain Provincial Nature Reserve was established, covering an area of 1,242.5 hectares. Its main objective is to protect deciduous broad-leaved forests (such as Liriodendron communities) and a variety of wildlife resources. It is the only nature reserve in the Huzhou area dedicated to wild plant conservation. Due to its subtropical location, mild climate, abundant rainfall, and the microclimates formed by its complex mountainous terrain, the area nurtures a rich diversity of wild plant species. It is a key habitat for rare and endangered protected plants such as Parrotia subaequalis and Liriodendron, as well as a breeding and dwelling place for various wild animals. It is also the type locality of the world’s endemic species — the Anji Tree Toad. The main peak of Longwang Mountain stands at an elevation of 1,587.4 meters, making it the highest peak in northern Zhejiang. It serves as a major water source for the Xitiaoxi River and Taihu Lake, and is the origin of the Huangpu River in Shanghai.

Longwang Mountain boasts abundant flora and fauna. In terms of plants: there are over 1,400 species from 654 genera and 156 families, including 23 rare and endangered species such as Liriodendron, Ginkgo, Parrotia subaequalis, and Emmenopterys henryi. Regarding animals: the surrounding areas of Longwang Mountain are home to 269 species of wildlife from 183 genera, 72 families, and 30 orders, including 6 Class I nationally protected species (such as clouded leopard, black muntjac, Reeves's pheasant, and leopard), 22 Class II protected species (such as macaques, pangolins, and silver pheasants), 40 species under key protection in Zhejiang Province, and 1 globally rare species (the Anji Tree Toad). As for insects: there are 1,717 species from 1,100 genera, 216 families, and 23 orders, including 9 new genera, 175 new species, 1 new family record for China, 2 new genus records for China, and 16 new species records for China.

The work of the reserve focuses on strengthening the protection of natural resources, ensuring effective forest fire prevention and management, enhancing public education and outreach, and fully leveraging the reserve’s multifunctional roles in conservation, scientific research, and environmental awareness.

Zhangcun Town: Zhangcun Town is situated at the northern foot of Tianmu Mountain, in the southwest of Anji, at the junction of two provinces (Zhejiang and Anhui) and three counties. To the south, it borders Lin’an City in the same province; to the west, it neighbors Ningguo County in Anhui Province; to the north, it adjoins Hanggai Town in the same county; and to the east, it connects with Baofu Town in the same county. It is approximately 45 kilometers from the county seat, 113 kilometers from Huzhou, 108 kilometers from Hangzhou, and 309 kilometers from Shanghai. The town covers an area of 89.16 square kilometers, governs 9 administrative villages, and has a total population of 16,000. The majority are Han Chinese, with a minority of She people.
