Anji Wu Changshuo Memorial Hall

The Anji Wu Changshuo Memorial Hall is a patriotic education base.

Wu Changshuo (1844–1927), whose given names were Jun and Junqing, styled himself Changshuo and was also known by the pseudonyms Fulu, Kuti, and Dalong, was a native of Anji County, Zhejiang Province. Born in turbulent times in old China, Wu experienced war and displacement in his youth, enduring many hardships. In middle age, he lived in straitened circumstances, described as "watching the sky while hungry," and his life was full of trials. These very experiences formed the profound foundation of his art. The era forged this giant and erected a monument in the history of Chinese art, exerting a far-reaching influence on later generations.

To commemorate this outstanding artist, the people of his hometown built the Wu Changshuo Memorial Hall in 1986 on the east side of Dibu Town, Anji County. In 1998, the new Wu Changshuo Memorial Hall was put into use, located within Changshuo Park, where the building blends harmoniously with its surroundings.

The memorial hall has a total exhibition area of 600 square meters. The second floor hosts the “Wu Changshuo Life Photo Exhibition” and the “Wu Changshuo Works Exhibition,” while the first floor serves as a temporary exhibition space for various shows. The museum houses Wu Changshuo’s calligraphy, paintings, seals, poetry, letters, personal belongings, as well as works by his descendants, disciples, and renowned contemporary artists. The museum has also published collections such as the “Collected Works of Wu Changshuo in the Museum” and “Wu Changshuo.”

The Wu Changshuo Memorial Hall, along with the Wu Changshuo Former Residence, serves as a window for international exchange and a patriotic education base for Anji County.

Wu Changshuo (August 1, 1844 – November 29, 1927), originally named Jun, also called Junqing, styled Changshuo, and also signed his name as Cangshi or Cangshi, with many aliases, including Cangshuo, Laocang, Laofou, Kuti, Dalong, Fadaoren, and Shizunzhe. He was born in Zhangwu Village, Xiaofeng County, Zhejiang Province (now Anji County, Huzhou City). A renowned traditional Chinese painter, calligrapher, and seal carver during the late Qing and early Republican periods, he was a representative of the “Later Haipai” school and the first president of the Xiling Seal Art Society in Hangzhou.
