Nancheng Ruins

The Nancheng Ruins are a Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Nancheng Ruins are located 1 km south of Nancheng Village on the east side of the road in Yaxi Town, Gaochun District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province.

The Nancheng Ruins, also known as "Kaihua City" or "Niu City," are historically recorded as "Kaihua City, the former site of Lishui, which was first built here during the Sui Dynasty." Gaochun was under the jurisdiction of Lishui from the Sui to the Tang Dynasty. In the fourth year of the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty, the southern seven townships of Lishui were designated as Gaochun County, a status that continues to this day. In the late Northern Song Dynasty, Yue Fei’s army fought against the Jin forces. A unit led by Niu Gao used fire attacks to capture an enemy-occupied city, striking fear into the enemy. Later generations renamed it "Niu City" in his honor. The ruins are roughly circular in layout, with earthen walls built through rammed earth techniques. An outer moat encircles the site, with a clear and well-defined outline. To the west of the moat lies a soil mound about 20 meters in diameter and approximately 6 meters above the ground, resembling a watchtower or beacon platform.

On October 22, 2002, the Nancheng Ruins were announced as part of the fifth batch of Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.

Yaxi Subdistrict: Yaxi Town in Gaochun County is situated in the eastern part of Nanjing City’s Gaochun District and is one of Jiangsu Province’s newly developed small towns. It borders Liyang to the east, is 8 km south of Dingbu Town in Langxi County, Anhui, and adjoins Lishui County to the north. The town covers a total area of 115 square kilometers and has a population of 50,000.

Yaxi has a long history, with human activity dating back as early as 3,000 years ago. The formation of the Yaxi town center began in the late Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty. Its favorable geographical location made it a commercial hub at the intersection of two provinces and four counties.
