Gaochun Museum

The Gaochun Museum is located on the south side of Baota Cultural Park in Gaochun District, Nanjing. With a total construction area of 9,697 square meters spread across three floors, the museum features a dignified and elegant atmosphere rendered through gray, blue, and brown tones as well as carved railings. Its overall design echoes that of the adjacent library. The museum is divided into six sections including exhibition, visitor services, and collection storage, among others. The exhibition area spans over 2,000 square meters, comprising three exhibition halls: the Basic Exhibition Hall, the Eastern Wu Kingdom Hall, and the Urban-Rural Planning Exhibition Hall.

The museum’s basic exhibition is themed “Green Waters and Blue Hills, Noble People in a Pure Land,” showcasing the historical, cultural, and ecological aspects of Gaochun. It is divided into six units: “Primitive Settlements · Ancient City Sites,” “Water Conservancy Projects · Polder Farming,” “Heaven, Earth, Humanity, and Divinity · Spiritual World,” “Migrating Populations · Ethnic Communities,” “Oral Traditions · Cultural Context,” and “Local Specialties · Cultural Relics.” Exhibition content includes: animal and plant fossils dating back over 10,000 years; a reconstructed living scene from the 6,300-year-old Neolithic “Xuecheng Site”; a reenactment of the digging of the Xu River — one of the world’s oldest man-made canals — by Wu Zixu; a reconstruction of the ancient Gucheng City, which predates Stone City by 208 years, along with a 3D display of Gaochun Old Street; images and light projections of Gaochun Taoist deity paintings and important intangible cultural heritage such as the Damalights and the Five Spirits Dance; representations of Gaochun’s historical water management achievements as a Jiangnan water town and modern key industries such as shipping (including shipbuilding) and crab farming; displays of the Gaochun dialect, known as a “living fossil of ancient Chinese,” and exhibitions on local customs and traditions. The exhibition comprehensively and intensively presents Gaochun’s long history, unique cultural identity, and diverse humanistic ecology, encapsulating the essence of Gaochun’s historical culture and natural environment.

The “Gaochun During the Eastern Wu Period” exhibition focuses on significant military and agricultural events of the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period that took place in Gaochun, as well as important historical figures who served or lived in Gaochun. Visiting the Gaochun Museum allows you to journey through over 10,000 years of Gaochun’s history in a short time and gain a comprehensive understanding of its historical culture and humanistic ecology.
