Ming Dynasty Meritorious Officials' Tombs at General's Hill

The Ming Dynasty Meritorious Officials' Tombs at General's Hill are a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

Over 700 years ago, Mu Ying, a founding general of the Ming Dynasty, was buried south of Nanjing, surrounded by three hills, with his back against a mountain ridge and facing a stretch of emerald-green lake. Many of his descendants were ennobled as princes or dukes and were also laid to rest here, and thus the place came to be known as "General's Hill." Originally called Guanyin Hill, it was renamed after the Ming Dynasty when the remains of the founding general Zhu Mu Ying and his successors were interred here, forming a grand burial complex of the Mu family. It was later renamed General's Hill. Since the 1950s, four tombs have been discovered here belonging to Mu Ying, Mu Sheng, Mu Changzuo, and Mu Rui. Only Mu Ying’s tomb has been preserved and was designated as a cultural relic protection site of Jiangning County in 1982. In October 2002, Mu Ying’s tomb was elevated from a county-level to a Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit and renamed the "Ming Dynasty Meritorious Officials' Tombs at General's Hill."

On October 22, 2002, the Ming Dynasty Meritorious Officials' Tombs at General's Hill were announced as part of the fifth batch of Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units.
