The Ancient Mouse Mound Cultural Site is a cultural heritage protection unit of Nanjing City.

The Ancient Mouse Mound Cultural Site is located at Caojiabian in Hushu Town, Jiangning District, dating back to the Neolithic Age.

Located within Hushu Town of Jiangning District’s Hushu Subdistrict, there are over ten sites including Liangtai, Chuandun, Shendun, Mouse Mound, and Qiangang. These are ancient cultural sites from the late Neolithic Age to the Shang and Zhou periods—the central area of the “Hushu Culture” sites. The distribution of the “Hushu Culture” sites is extremely extensive, covering about 400 square kilometers. The surrounding area features continuous mountain ranges, with the Qinhuai Plain’s polder fields lying in between. Numerous artifacts have been unearthed from the “Hushu Culture” sites, including stone tools, pottery, and bronze ware. The discovery of these relics indicates that around 3,000 to 4,000 years ago, human activity already existed in the Hushu area. Based on the characteristics and evolution of the unearthed objects, archaeologists believe that the inhabitants of the “Hushu Culture” were tribes who used bronze tools and established their settlements on the ruins of Neolithic villages.

Hushu Subdistrict: Known as the “Little Nanjing,” Hushu Town is located in the southeastern part of Jiangning District, Nanjing City, at the junction of Jiangning, Jurong, and Lishui districts (cities/counties). Following administrative adjustments, the new Hushu was formed by merging the former Hushu, Longdu, and Zhougang areas, covering a total area of 145 square kilometers. It governs 12 administrative villages and 10 communities, with a population of 80,200.
