Hushu Mosque

Hushu Mosque is a municipal-level cultural heritage site in Nanjing.

Hushu Mosque is located at No. 39, Shuibei Street, Hushu Subdistrict, Jiangning District, Nanjing. It serves as the main place of worship for over a thousand Hui Muslims in the Hushu area. In 2006, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage site.

In the 22nd year of the Guangxu reign (1896), repairs were carried out and the main prayer hall was rebuilt. In the 2nd year of the Xuantong reign (1910), a well 16.5 meters deep was dug in the left lower courtyard of the hall. In the 3rd year of the Xuantong reign, five tile-roofed rooms were built on the left front side of the main hall—water room on the left, dormitory on the right, and guest hall in the middle. In 1919, the front hall with three rooms, the main prayer hall with five rooms, and two wing rooms on the east side of the gate were renovated. In 1922, the rear passage and three sets of steps at the front and rear were constructed. The roof of the main prayer hall was originally designed in a palatial style with flying eaves and upturned corners, but due to long-term neglect, the northeastern corner cracked and was on the verge of collapse. Later, the government allocated funds for restoration, converting the roof to a flat design while largely restoring the interior to its former appearance. The structure is made of brick and wood, with a width of 40 meters and a total depth of 64 meters. Around 1932, a primary school for Hui children was established in the mosque. In 1956, the school was relocated outside the mosque. In 1964, the main prayer hall was demolished due to disrepair. In 1979, the government allocated funds for reconstruction.

Scale and Layout

After the 1979 renovation funded by the government, the main prayer hall was fitted with a flat roof, and its interior was largely restored to its original appearance. Inside the mosque courtyard are three ginkgo trees, each with trunks so large that they require two people to encircle them. These trees, with their lush foliage, are over a hundred years old. Two stone steles are also found within the mosque, successively recording the history of the mosque and the recovery from three past damages.

Hushu Subdistrict: Known as the "Little Nanjing," Hushu Town is located in the southeastern part of Jiangning District, Nanjing, at the junction of Jiangning, Jurong, and Lishui districts (cities/counties). Following administrative adjustments, the new Hushu area was formed by merging the former Hushu, Longdu, and Zhougang areas, covering a total area of 145 square kilometers. It governs 12 administrative villages and 10 communities, with a population of 80,200.
