The Former Site of Wuxi County Chamber of Commerce is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Former Site of Wuxi County Chamber of Commerce is the national heritage site nearest to Wuxi Railway Station. Nestled within the commercial plaza in front of the station and surrounded by high-rise buildings, the space feels cramped and shadowed, exuding a sense of unease. This relic from the Republican era was once nearly demolished during urban redevelopment but barely made it into the 7th National Key Cultural Relics Protection List — earning a temporary “stay of execution” that spared it from being razed to the ground.

Originally known as the Xigold Chamber of Commerce, the Wuxi County Chamber of Commerce was founded by two prominent Shanghai-based Wuxi entrepreneurs: Zhou Shunqing, a magnate in silk reeling and coal-iron, and the capitalist Zhu Dachun. By the late Qing Dynasty, Wuxi’s industrial and commercial sectors had flourished, earning it the nickname “Little Shanghai.” Products like cotton yarn and flour, described as part of the “white empire,” led the nation in both production and sales, enjoying an unshakable position. The establishment of the chamber was rooted in this economic backdrop — serving as a social organization with functions in economic communication, coordination, and protection.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) designated the Former Site of Wuxi County Chamber of Commerce as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
