Former Residence of Qin Bangxian

The former residence of Qin Bangxian is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former residence of Qin Bangxian, also known as the former residence of Bo Gu, is located at No. 112 Chongning Road, Chong’an District, Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, China (originally over Shigu River). Built in the late Qing Dynasty during the Guangxu reign, it was originally the home of Qin Zhuoru, a relative of Qin Bangxian. The building is divided into eastern and western sections, connected by a service lane and a horizontal corridor, with inner corridors linking the courtyards. The western section is the main part, consisting of seven courtyards, including the entrance hall, sedan hall, main hall, and residential area. The third courtyard features the main hall “Jixi Hall,” all of which are three-bay-wide buildings with flush gable roofs. From 1916 to 1921, Qin Bangxian lived in the fourth courtyard with his parents, renting the space where the central room served as a guest hall, the east side as a study, and the west side as a bedroom. The stone gate at the front of the courtyard is inscribed with the words “Cultivate Virtue and Pursue Learning.” This architectural complex has now been converted into the Qin Bangxian Memorial Hall, with its most recent renovation taking place from March to December 2004. To the east of the former residence lies Wen Yuan Fang, which preserves the site of the Qin Huaihai Ancestral Temple.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) designated the former residence of Qin Bangxian as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Bo Gu, originally named Qin Bangxian, with the courtesy name Zemin, was born on June 24, 1907, into a family of scholars in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. His father, Qin Zhaohuang, graduated from the Hangzhou Law School and once worked as an assistant lawyer in Shanghai. In 1915, due to illness, the family moved back to their ancestral home in Wuxi. As a child, Bo Gu studied at the Qin Family Public School, and later attended the County No. 2 Higher Elementary School and the Provincial No. 3 Normal School Affiliated Primary School.

In the summer of 1921, Bo Gu graduated from elementary school and was admitted to the Textile Department of the Jiangsu Provincial No. 2 Industrial Specialized School.
