He Zhenliang and the Olympic Museum

He Zhenliang and the Olympic Museum is located within the Canal Park at the foot of Ronghu Bridge. The museum covers an exhibition area of 3,800 square meters and consists of a main hall and an auxiliary hall. The main hall was renovated from an industrial warehouse dating back to the last century, retaining the original local architectural style. With the high attention, active promotion of the Wuxi Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, the strong support of all sectors of society, and their joint efforts, the foundation stone of the museum was laid on April 30, 2007, and after one year of construction, it officially opened on May 20, 2008. A former member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference inscribed the museum’s name, and Mr. Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, sent a warm congratulatory message specially for the opening.

The establishment of the “He Zhenliang and the Olympic Museum” aims to promote the Olympic spirit, preserve precious historical materials, and also serves as a sincere tribute to Mr. He Zhenliang, the “Mr. Olympics of China” who hailed from Wuxi. Shi Zhan, Deputy Director of the Wuxi Municipal Bureau of Culture, introduced that He Zhenliang was born in Wuxi, grew up in Wuxi, and always regarded himself as a true Wuxi native. Since the old residence of Mr. He Zhenliang, which has since been demolished, was located near the current Ronghu Bridge, and because he had a deep cultural foundation and a particular fondness for historic architecture, the former plastic factory warehouse in Furong Lake Park was ultimately chosen as the site for the “He Zhenliang and the Olympic Museum.”

The original plastic factory warehouse has been divided into two floors within the museum, with a total construction area of approximately 1,700 square meters and an exhibition area of about 1,200 square meters. The interior exhibition utilizes modern techniques such as sound, light, and electricity to organically integrate the life and achievements of Mr. He Zhenliang with Olympic-related materials. These include a chronology of major events in Mr. He's life; photographs and key materials from various important periods of his life; certificates of award and medals from different eras, especially after he began working in sports; various appointment letters and significant position certifications; major publications, papers, reports, and speeches; photographic materials from major diplomatic events and important domestic activities; correspondence and interaction records with international celebrities and friends; related handwritten notes, visit records, and meeting minutes; souvenirs used or collected during important events; as well as important personal inscriptions, photography, and crafted works.

Comrade He Zhenliang, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a loyal communist fighter, former Vice Minister and Deputy Party Group Secretary of the State Physical Culture and Sports Commission of the People’s Republic of China, passed away due to illness at 15:50 on January 4, 2015, in Beijing, at the age of 85.
