Wuxi Canal Culture and Art Exhibition Hall

The Canal Culture and Art Exhibition Hall is situated on the west side of South Changjie Street in front of Qingming Bridge and echoes the bridge via the square in front of it. By showcasing tangible aspects of ancient canal culture—such as trade and passenger services—as well as the commercial retro buildings around the Ancient Canal Museum, the hall presents the canal’s golden age. It highlights the vital role that the ancient canal played in the progress of human civilization and the spread of material culture. With time as the main thread and using various historical documents, the exhibition illustrates the profound legacy of the ancient canal culture, enhancing its tourism value.

Covering an area of nearly 3,500 square meters with a built-up area of 2,250 square meters, the hall was named by [Comrade]—. The architectural complex follows the Ming and Qing styles, exuding the distinctive charm of an old street. The art gallery also incorporates scene models and sculptures to create atmosphere. One of the exhibition halls is infused with the regional characteristics of Wuxi’s “small bridges, flowing water, and households,” fully displaying the seamless integration between people and scenery, objects, and paintings.

Designed by Tsinghua University, the Canal Culture and Art Exhibition Hall fully explores the rich historical and cultural essence of Bodu Port and the ancient canal. It establishes the Canal Culture and Art Exhibition Hall and opens the square in front of Qingming Bridge. Within the site, two protected historical buildings—the Kange Rescue Society and Zhen Tang An (both municipal cultural heritage sites)—along with the former site of Qingming Bridge Primary School, have been preserved and restored to serve as viewing points that showcase the ancient canal culture.
