St. Cross Church

St. Cross Church is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

St. Cross Church (shenggonghuishizitang), located at No. 98 Zhongshan Road in Wuxi, was first built in the fifth year of the Republic of China (1916).

The Wuxi branch of the Anglican Church was established in the 26th year of the Guangxu reign (1901) by the American Episcopal Church's Jiangsu diocese, which sent Reverend MacGillivray and Assistant Reverend Zhu Baohua (a Chinese national). In the 29th year of Guangxu (1903), a small chapel and bell tower were constructed, and in the fifth year of the Republic of China (1916), the main worship hall was added. It was named St. Cross Church, now known as Wuxi’s Christ Church. Major renovations were carried out in 1954 and 1981.

The existing St. Cross Church is a Gothic-style building with a pointed roof and no beams. It covers a construction area of 767 square meters, features a cruciform layout, and has walls adorned with red brick inlays.

In January 1994, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Wuxi Municipal People's Government.

In March 2019, St. Cross Church was included in the eighth batch of Jiangsu Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Units.
