Zhide Ancestral Hall

Zhide Ancestral Hall is a cultural heritage protection unit of Wuxi City.

Zhide Ancestral Hall, built in the 30th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1765), was funded by Wu Yue, the magistrate of Wuxi County, along with Wu Peiyuan, the 101st-generation descendant of Tai Bo and magistrate of Suian County in Zhejiang, among others. It was constructed on the former site of the Shigui Pavilion and Shenghe Hall from Zou Garden, purchased to the east of the Erquan Pavilion in Huishan, and relocated to form the Zhide Ancestral Hall. It was dedicated to the worship of Wu Tai Bo, the founding ancestor of Jiangnan’s development. Tai Bo “three times yielded the world to others, and the people found no words to praise him.” Confucius referred to him as “a man of ultimate virtue.” Hence, his descendants named it Zhide Ancestral Hall. It is located northwest of Yingshan Lake, on the former site of Yugugou from the Ming Dynasty.

The Huishan Ancestral Hall Cluster in Wuxi encompasses ten categories and a total of 22 types of ancestral hall structures. Its architectural style is primarily from the Ming, Qing, and Republic of China periods, spanning a historical timeline of approximately 1,200 years from the Tang Dynasty to the Republic of China. With 70 ancestral halls dedicated to different surnames’ founding or migrating ancestors, it comparatively and systematically preserves the culture of ancestral halls and genealogical records of the Wu region and even all of China. This is rare both domestically and internationally and forms an important component of the world’s cultural heritage.
