The year 2014 marked the 65th anniversary of the victory of the Crossing of the Yangtze River Campaign. Sixty-five years ago, on the river surface of Yangzhong, Jiangsu, the heroic act of Yan Hongying, the “girl with the big braids,” who fearlessly helped the People's Liberation Army cross the Yangtze River, was captured in the iconic photograph “I Sent My Loved Ones Across the River,” becoming a widely told historical tale. During the campaign, the 20th Army of the PLA fought bravely, and Yangzhong, serving as a strategic “riverbank springboard” for the New Fourth Army’s operations across the great river, made significant contributions to the great victory of the Crossing of the Yangtze River Campaign and the Liberation War. The people of Yangzhong, represented by the “girl with the big braids,” actively joined the support troops, rowing small wooden boats to help the PLA soldiers break through the natural barrier of the Yangtze River, forging a deep bond of military-civilian solidarity with the 20th Army.

To carry forward the spirit of the river crossing, strengthen patriotic and revolutionary tradition education, this year, Yangzhong City built the Crossing the River Cultural Park and the themed sculpture “I Sent My Loved Ones Across the River” at the historic crossing site of the 20th Army of the PLA.
