Former Site of Bacon Normal School

The Former Site of Bacon Normal School is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The Former Site of Bacon Normal School is located in Changwang Village, Youfang Town, Yangzhong City. It was originally the Qingshan Guild Hall. In 1939, the forces under Guan Wenwei of the Southern Jiangsu Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army’s Advance Column entered Yangzhong and resumed the “Yangzhong Teachers Training Class” in Changwang Village. In the autumn of 1945, following the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, to commemorate one of the founders of the anti-Japanese democratic regime in Yangzhong and the first county magistrate of the Yangzhong County Anti-Japanese Democratic Government, martyr Li Peigen, the “Yangzhong County Bacon Simple Normal School,” abbreviated as “Bacon Normal School,” was established here. Students were grassroots rural cadres and socially educated youths. The school closed in early November of that year when the New Fourth Army withdrew northward, having trained a group of revolutionary backbone members. The site remains intact and is a brick-and-wood structured, single-story tiled building in a traditional courtyard style. The Former Site of Bacon Normal School serves as a physical testament to Yangzhong City’s commemoration of revolutionary martyrs and the cultivation of revolutionary cadres. It was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province in 2011.
