Chen Guanyang, a native of Dantu, Zhenjiang, came from a poor family in his early years. Through diligent study — even going so far as to tie his hair to the beam to stay awake — he eventually passed the imperial examination and rose to become the Minister of Personnel in the Ming Dynasty. To repay the kindness of his hometown and encourage future generations to study hard, he used his life savings to build this pagoda, naming it “Gratitude Pagoda.” Later, the pagoda became a landmark along the Yangtze River shipping route. Traveling upstream, it is the first pagoda seen by sailors, thus earning the reputation of “the First Pagoda on the Mighty Yangtze.”
