Former Residence of Leng Yiuqiu

The former residence of Leng Yiuqiu is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Leng Yiuqiu is located in Huangxu Town, Dantu. Built in the early 1920s, it is a standalone residential compound with a main building that is a two-story structure facing south and combining Chinese and Western architectural styles.

Leng Yiuqiu, a native of Huangxu Town, Dantu, was involved in anti-Qing revolutionary activities alongside Zhao Sheng and others. On October 10, 1911, when the Wuchang Uprising broke out, he served as the brigade commander of the Guangxi Militia and marched north to support the revolution in Hubei. In January 1912, provisional President Sun Yat-sen awarded him the rank of lieutenant general and the Order of the Wenhu, appointing him as the commander of the 3rd Division of the 1st Army of the Army of the Republic of China. He later participated in Sun Yat-sen’s Constitutional Protection Movement. After the failure of the movement, he returned to Dantu to engage in industry, founding the Yong’an Silkworm Egg Farm. On July 1, 1945, he visited Yan'an along with Huang Yanpei and five other democratic figures. At the airport, they were warmly welcomed by Communist leaders including Mao Zedong, and discussed major issues with them. During the Chinese Civil War, using his position as the acting chairman of the Provincial Provisional Senate, he helped rescue underground Communists, New Fourth Army soldiers, and revolutionary civilians, saving nearly a hundred lives. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he attended the First National Political Consultative Conference and the founding ceremony, serving as a deputy to the First National People’s Congress and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He held various positions, including member of the East China Military and Political Committee and minister of the East China Water Resources Department, vice governor of Jiangsu Province, and vice-chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. To commemorate his life and achievements, the residence was converted into the Leng Yiuqiu Memorial Hall in 2002.

Leng Yiuqiu (1882–1959), styled Yiuqiu, was from Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. He was a military strategist and politician. He was a founder of the Chinese Vocational Education Association, the Chinese Democratic Political League (the predecessor of the China Democratic League), and the Democratic Construction Association (the predecessor of the China Association for Promoting Democracy).

Graduating in 1905 from the Anqing Military Preparatory School, he joined the “Classmates’ Association” and the “Yuewanghui” during his time there. Later, he joined the Tongmenghui and served as the overall commander of the Anqing Uprising. He was arrested due to an informant’s report but was eventually released after a rescue effort.
