Martyrs' Cemetery of Wang Jie

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Wang Jie is a national AA-level tourist attraction and a classic red tourism site.

The Martyrs' Cemetery of Wang Jie is located in Zhanglou Subdistrict, Pizhou City, Jiangsu Province, about 6 kilometers from the city center. It was built starting in 1967 to commemorate the great communist fighter—Wang Jie. The main memorial and preservation facilities include, in sequence, a protection pavilion at the site of his sacrifice, an exhibition hall of his deeds, a memorial square, the martyrs' tomb, and a wall inscribed with calligraphy from party and state leaders. It serves as a patriotic and national defense education base in Pizhou City and is a national 2A-level red tourism attraction. In March 1982, the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government designated it as a provincial-level martyrs' memorial protection unit, and in March 2009, the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced it as a national key martyrs' memorial building protection unit.

On July 14, 1965, Comrade Wang Jie, a squad leader of the engineering company of an armored unit of the Jinan Military Region, was carrying out militia training tasks in the former Zhanglou Commune. At the critical moment when a landmine accidentally detonated, he resolutely threw himself toward the blast to protect 12 local militiamen and others on the scene, composing a magnificent hymn to communism with his blood and life. To mourn the self-sacrificing communist fighter Comrade Wang Jie, the former Pizhou County Revolutionary Committee, with approval from the regional revolutionary committee, began constructing his tomb in 1967. The tomb is a circular cement structure, and the wall behind it bears calligraphy from proletarian revolutionaries of the older generation such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, and Dong Biwu. In 1975, with the help of the 6057th Unit, the Wang Jie Martyrs Memorial Hall, reception room, and supporting facilities were completed. Since its opening, the cemetery has received hundreds of thousands of visitors from all walks of life each year, who come to pay their respects and consciously receive education in patriotism and revolutionary heroism.

Since 2009, in order to better protect this patriotic education base and promote the revolutionary spirit of the martyr, Pizhou City has redesigned and reorganized the martyrs' cemetery. The area of the cemetery has been expanded to 50 mu (approximately 3.3 hectares), and the Martyrs' Deeds Memorial Hall, with a construction area of 3,300 square meters, has been rebuilt. Using modern technologies such as sound, light, and electricity, the hall vividly recreates the great and glorious life of Wang Jie and interprets his revolutionary spirit of “fearing neither hardship nor death.”

Wang Jie (1942–1965) was from Huagu Village, Chengjiao Township, Jinxiang County (now Wangjie Village, Jinxiang Town). In 1957, when his hometown was hit by flooding, he risked his life to save the horses of the production team. In 1958, he was admitted to Jinxiang No. 1 Middle School and helped the production team’s accountant with bookkeeping voluntarily every Sunday when he returned home. In 1961, he enlisted in the army and served as a soldier in the engineering company of an armored unit of the Jinan Military Region of the People's Liberation Army.
