Yancheng Red-Crowned Crane Wetland Ecotourism Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Jiangsu Yancheng National Nature Reserve for Rare Birds, also known as the Yancheng Biosphere Reserve (abbreviated as Yancheng Reserve), is located 40 kilometers directly east of Yancheng city center, spanning five counties (cities): Xiangshui, Binhai, Sheyang, Dafeng, and Dongtai. The nearest town is Yandong Town in Sheyang County. The reserve primarily protects inland wetland and aquatic ecosystems, with its main conservation targets being wetlands and precious waterfowl such as the red-crowned crane.

There are 262 (226) (over 300) bird species from 54 families and 19 orders in the Yancheng Biosphere Reserve, making it an important wintering ground in China for various rare birds including cranes, grebes, herons, geese, ducks, storks, and gulls. The wetlands in the reserve serve as the largest wintering habitat for the globally endangered red-crowned crane. The area lies at the intersection of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, forming a broad transitional zone where species from both regions intermingle, as well as a transition between the warm temperate and subtropical zones. As a result, the fauna, including avian species, exhibits characteristics of both northern and southern regions. The area is also home to many economically valuable bird species, such as the common moorhen and mallard.

The reserve is also one of the few regions in China with a high concentration of highly endangered species. By 2008, 29 species found here had been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
