Yancheng Meteorological Science Museum

Yancheng Meteorological Science Museum serves as a base for science education.

Opened in April 2008, Yancheng Meteorological Science Museum is the largest and most comprehensive and professional meteorological science museum in Jiangsu Province. The museum is divided into nine exhibition areas, including an overview of Yancheng, disastrous weather, and the collection of meteorological data. It offers strong public interactivity and educational fun, effectively popularizing meteorological scientific knowledge.

Humans live in the atmospheric environment and are constantly influenced by weather and climate, which are also closely related to socio-economic development and national defense. For decades, meteorological workers have diligently worked on the front lines of cloud observation and weather forecasting, meticulously recording every piece of meteorological data and carefully producing each weather forecast. They provide diverse and accurate weather and climate information in a timely manner, playing a crucial role in safeguarding people’s lives and property as well as disaster prevention and mitigation.

The Party has proposed to further strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation and actively respond to climate change—tasks that have enhanced the sense of responsibility and mission among all meteorological workers. To popularize meteorological science knowledge across society, raise awareness of climate and disaster prevention, and help better mitigate risks and harness benefits, our bureau, with the care and support of leaders at all levels, specially established Yancheng Meteorological Science Museum. The museum features thematic display boards on Yancheng’s climate, atmospheric exploration, and weather forecasting, along with three touch screens and one 3D 120-degree panoramic cinema. Its content is rich, its format innovative, and its presentation vivid and easy to understand.

The construction of Yancheng Meteorological Science Museum has received full recognition from leaders at all levels. In April 2008, Wang Shourong, Deputy Director of the China Meteorological Administration, and Bian Guanghui, Director of the Jiangsu Meteorological Bureau, jointly unveiled the museum. Vice Mayors Zhu Chuangeng and Chen Huitang of the Yancheng Municipal Government also visited and provided guidance. Since its opening, the museum has been warmly welcomed by the public, with active visits from relevant government departments and various sectors of society, especially among primary and secondary school students. As meteorological workers and science communicators, we feel truly pleased and gratified.

There is great potential in meteorological science outreach. We always keep in mind the earnest expectations of leaders at all levels and remain deeply concerned about the public’s desire for scientific knowledge. To fully leverage the role of Yancheng Meteorological Science Museum and expand the influence of meteorological science education, the Yancheng Meteorological Bureau has further developed an online version of the museum. This not only showcases the physical museum but also breaks through the limitations of space and time, broadening the audience for meteorological science and enriching its content.

The theme planning and layout concept of Yancheng Meteorological Science Museum are positioned as follows: showcasing a technological display form and diversified scientific content; highlighting the regional environment and unique meteorological features, conveying the theme “Eastern Wetland, Water-Green Yancheng, Ever-Changing Skies, and Diverse Weather” [1].
