The former residence of Hao Bozang is a cultural tourism attraction.

The former residence of Hao Bozang is located in Haorong Village, Gewu Township, Yandu County, situated within the Helong Weir area of the Lixia River region, facing Dazou Town of Xinghua City across the river. Mr. Hao Bozang’s home is in Beizhuang, a typical brick-and-tile residence with an east-facing main gate, consisting of two courtyards, east and south wing rooms, and a central courtyard. The front section has three rooms serving as a living room and study, with couplets on the pillars written by Zheng Banqiao that read: “Neither overly extravagant nor overly frugal, also knowledgeable in farming and letters.” The rear section also has three rooms, which were the bedrooms of Hao Bozang’s parents, where the Hao siblings were born. The south wing room functioned as a storage space and the bedroom for the male servant, while the east wing room served as the kitchen and the bedroom for the female servant. The courtyard contains four flower beds planted with spring orchids, autumn chrysanthemums, peonies, and tree peonies, along with a bamboo grove, creating a very serene environment. Nowadays, the former residence of Hao Bozang has become a tourist attraction in Yancheng, receiving many visitors from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese communities each year. They are warmly welcomed by the hospitable residents of Haorong Village, leaving them with wonderful impressions.

Hao Bozang, a native of Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, was sent by his father at the age of six to study under his clan relative Hao Yin’gu (known as Eighth Master) at a family school, where he learned to read and write. At ten, he was sent by his father to Shangzhuang Primary School, more than ten li from home, where he joined a higher-grade class, later transferring to Yancheng County No. 2 Higher Primary School. After graduation, he was admitted to Yancheng Middle School. At seventeen, he went to Nanjing to apply for the fourth intake of the Whampoa Military Academy, thus beginning his military career. During the War of Resistance against Japan, he participated in the Battle of Guangzhou and guarded the Humen Fort. Later, he followed the Chinese Expeditionary Force 38th Division, led by Sun Li-jen, to fight in Burma. After the defeat, they retreated into India for regrouping. During the Liaoshen Campaign, he was recalled from the Jinzhou frontlines to become a member of Chiang Kai-shek’s personal staff. After the liberation of the mainland, he went to Taiwan, first stationed at Kinmen, then promoted to Director of Chiang Kai-shek’s Office, Chief of the General Staff under President Chiang Ching-kuo, and Minister of Defense. After assuming power, he served as Premier, as well as Vice Chairman of the Kuomintang Central Committee and Presidential Advisor.

Hao Bozang (August 8, 1919 – 2020), courtesy name Bochun, of Han ethnicity, was born on August 8, 1919, in Haorong Village, Gewu Town, Yandu District, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province. He was a Taiwanese First-Class General, having served as the “Premier” and Chief of the General Staff of the Taiwan region. His son, Hao Longbin, is the former Mayor of Taipei.

Hao Bozang graduated from the Artillery Department of the 12th Class of the Army Officer Academy, after which he immediately joined the War of Resistance against Japan. He participated in the 1938 Battle of Guangzhou and the 1939 Battle of Southern Anhui.
