Site of Dai King’s Palace

The Site of Dai King’s Palace is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangsu Province.

The Site of Dai King’s Palace is located at No. 18 Qianjie, Jintan District, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province.

It was the residence of Huang Chengzhong, the Dai King of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Huang Chengzhong (1826–1865), a native of Guangxi, was ennobled as the Dai King in 1862 after he killed the invading army commander Ward during the capture of Cixi, Jiangxi. The palace faces west and has seven courtyards extending from east to west, covering an area of 1,624 square meters. The main hall consists of three rooms built with nanmu wood, spanning 15 meters in width and 10 meters in depth. The beams, arches, pillars, and rafters are all painted, with gold leaf applied to the artwork. The murals mainly depict scenes from traditional operas such as “The Chain Strategy,” “The Empty City Stratagem,” “Wei Chi Visits a Sage,” and “Li Bai Drunk,” as well as landscape figure paintings of visiting friends and sightseeing, and depictions of cloud dragons and colorful phoenixes. It is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit.
