Liu Haisu Art Museum

Liu Haisu (1896–1994) was a founding figure in modern Chinese art, a pioneer of the New Art Movement, and an outstanding art educator. Over his artistic career spanning more than 80 years, he mastered both Eastern and Western art traditions and bridged ancient and contemporary styles, creating a wealth of artistic masterpieces that brought international prestige to China. In his later years, he donated to the nation, free of charge, the rare artworks by master painters from various dynasties—treasures he had painstakingly collected over the years—as well as his own works.

To promote Mr. Liu’s illustrious legacy and patriotic spirit, the Changzhou Municipal Government funded the construction of the first phase of the Liu Haisu Art Museum in 1993, followed by the second phase in 1998, named after his former residence “Jingyuan Hall.” The second phase houses the Liu Haisu Literature and History Archive, a Memorial Exhibition on his Life, a Fine Art Gallery, an art gallery, and multiple exhibition halls and reception meeting rooms. Covering an area of 2,500 m² with a total floor space of 3,000 m², the museum has a total exhibition area of 1,200 m². “Jingyuan Hall” and the adjacent memorial park create a borrowed scenic view through landscape design and spatial transformation, featuring innovative architecture. It has become a landmark project in Changzhou’s social development and an important cultural tourism attraction.

The Liu Haisu Art Museum serves a dual function as a modern art museum and a memorial to a renowned artist. It is a multifunctional, multidimensional art center that accommodates exhibitions, collections, exchanges, research, and public art education. The museum showcases high-quality artworks of diverse genres, collects and studies contemporary works of various styles and schools, fosters friendship and collaboration with artists from around the world, and is dedicated to serving society and the general public.
