The fairytale-like city hall clock tower and the lively street performers on the square form every traveler’s first impression of Munich. Nearby, traditional grain markets and specialty shops offer an endless array of sights and things to buy.

Munich’s New Town Hall is a Gothic architectural masterpiece in Munich, Germany. It houses the City Council, the Mayor’s office, and administrative offices. Built between 1867 and 1908, the municipal government moved here from the Old Town Hall in 1874.

The façade of the New Town Hall is adorned with statues of Bavarian kings, heroes, and saints. The grand structure features lavish decorations, and its 85-meter-tall clock tower houses Germany’s largest mechanical clock, which performs the Wedding of Wilhelm V scene three times a day for about 10 minutes each time.

Situated on the east side of the square, Munich’s Old Town Hall is now used by city council representatives. This building dates back to 1310, with its famous hall constructed in 1392. It was heavily damaged during World War II, and its spire was not rebuilt until 1971.

The grain market by Marienplatz is one of Munich’s most famous food markets. Originally a farmers’ trading spot, it has evolved into a food lover’s haven. Spanning a large area, the market offers flowers, fruits, fresh meat, cured meats, seasonings, cheese, seafood, juices, and more—making it an incredibly diverse market.
