Banqiao Cultural Park

Banqiao Cultural Park is located to the west of Zheng Banqiao’s former residence. Though not large in scale, it is rich in cultural atmosphere. It is a garden deeply infused with the artistic essence of Zheng Banqiao, with its couplets and plaques all reflecting the core ideas of his philosophy. The "Woting Pavilion" is designed according to the poetic imagery of the line: “Lying in my official chamber, I hear the rustling bamboo, and suspect it to be the people’s cries of distress. For us, minor officials, every twig and leaf is of concern.” The couplet on the gatepost, reading “Only those who can embrace confusion are wise; only those willing to suffer loss are not fools,” interprets Zheng Banqiao’s philosophy of “rare is the wisdom to feign ignorance” and “suffering loss is a blessing.” A pool within the park is named Chuze (meaning “Marsh of Chu”), and the small plaque inscribed with “Borrowing the Moon” in the waterside pavilion reflects Zheng Banqiao’s lofty ideal of contentment in poverty and solitude. The “Orchid and Bamboo Hall” in the park is named after Zheng Banqiao’s skill in painting orchids and bamboos. This hall replicates the study and creative space where the master lived and worked during his time at the “Floating Bubble Studio.”
