Jiashu Lane Ancient Residential Complex

Jiashu Lane Ancient Residential Complex is a cultural heritage site protected by Xinghua City.

Jiashu Lane Ancient Residential Complex is located in Jiashu Lane outside the eastern city wall of Xinghua City. Originally built as mansions by descendants of Shu Chu, an imperial censor from the Ming Dynasty, the lane was named Jiashu Lane to distinguish it from Shujia Grand Lane in the southern part of the city. Since the Qing Dynasty, the properties have been sold or renovated into residences.

The eastern side of the lane mainly features the former residence of Zhao Haixian (Lü’ao, 1830–1904), a famous physician of the Qing Dynasty, while the northern section on the western side has a grand entrance gate with high walls, made of polished bricks and adorned with exquisite carvings. The area spans east to west and includes multiple halls, corridors, and studies. To the south lies the Hetang Hall of Wei Yintang (1866–1932), another celebrated physician of the Qing Dynasty, consisting of east and west courtyards and five north-south sections. The households of the Wei and Zhao families were leading representatives of the “Xinghua Medical School” during the late Qing Dynasty, with generations of renowned doctors whose fame spread across the country.

Most structures in the Jiashu Lane Ancient Residential Complex date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. These contiguous buildings, with their grey-tiled roofs, blue bricks, and horse-head walls, hold significant historical, cultural, and architectural value.

In 1986, the People’s Government of Xinghua County designated it as a cultural heritage protection unit.
