Designed by the celebrated architect Arata Isozaki, the Shanghai Himalayas Museum originated as the Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art, established in 2005. It represents Mr. Dai Zhikang, Chairman of Zendai Group’s cultural contribution to society. The main museum is located within the Himalayas Center in Pudong, Shanghai—a hub of culture and humanity—and functions as a privately-run, non-profit art institution dedicated to art collection, exhibitions, education, research, and academic exchange. Since its inception, the museum has explored new models of operation under the contemporary social context, emphasizing academic rigor, breaking down interdisciplinary barriers, connecting tradition with modernity, and promoting international cultural and artistic exchanges. It is committed to becoming a new type of art museum that enhances professionalism while engaging the public.

The Shanghai Himalayas Museum also has a branch location—the Zendai Zhujiajiao Art Museum in the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao, Qingpu District, Shanghai. Housed in a restored traditional building called Miaoqu Lou, the branch focuses on international artist-in-residence programs and public art projects.

The Shanghai Himalayas Museum actively engages in international cultural and artistic exchanges. Through exhibitions and various forms of academic interaction, it strives to build a platform for dialogue among artists, institutions, and the public both in China and abroad. In the context of globalization, it seeks new possibilities for development. With a proactive approach, the Himalayas Museum has established itself as a new brand of art museum in Shanghai characterized by contemporaneity, academic depth, and openness, gradually extending its influence internationally. Since 2005, the museum has hosted nearly 60 international art exchange projects, making it an important platform for grassroots international cultural exchange in China.

In recent years, the museum has organized exhibitions such as Kenya Hara Design Exhibition, Tony Cragg: Sculpture and Painting Exhibition, a series of Ink Wash Exhibitions, the solo exhibition of Ofra Levi, the John Moores Painting Prize Exhibition, the solo exhibition of Sean Scully, and the solo exhibition of Michael Craig-Martin. It has also participated in exhibitions or events at the Marrakech Biennale, Liverpool Biennial, Gwangju Biennale, and Venice Biennale.
